it's warming up again...

My Olaf

12-11-17
Well other than taking 15 years to figure out the title of this email, it's been a wonderful week! It did in fact snow and I was in heaven, but certainly not used to the cold like that. It's been about 7 or 10 years since it has snowed here. So. Wow. We had exchanges this week, Elder Standing came down to me and Elder Mangum went up to Elder Cooper for the day. It was fun to be with an old friend for the day.

P-day bike ride
Other than that it was a week full of miracles in our area and in the rest of the district. Elder Mangum and I found some awesome new investigators!  They are all super great and ready to make changes in their lives. It's been good getting used to leading this district and I have learned soooooooo much from it already, but I have so very much more to learn and do haha. One of the things I've been working on this week is that funny thing called "humility". It is definitely one of those things that takes constant attention and care or else, for me, I get carried away with thinking all about myself. Having to realize God is right 100% of the time sounds like an easy thing to do, and it may be, but acting on that realization is a whole new thing. So that's what I've been trying to do, humble myself enough to constantly follow the will of God and align my life with that will. It's HARD! The blessings are so worth it though, as we have seen this week. I love this work and I love my God and I love my Savior. It's super exciting to be doing this right now!

Let that light shine!

12-4-17
Well I am writing this on my new phone... It's weird for sure haha yeah see I just used an emoji... Anyway it's been a good week, kinda of a hard one as we've been trying to get used to our new tools and keep our investigators progressing towards baptism. We had to drop one of our investigators baptism date this week. For some reason we were just not able to have a lesson with her and she hasn't kept commitments in a while... So we are looking for a Hail Mary pass (miracle) with her. Please keep her in your prayers! Our other investigator is still looking good for the 24th, we are just struggling with seeing him often but it should all work out fine, also keep praying for him and his family please. The rest of the district is working super hard but right now just not seeing any fruits, kinda like it's been my whole mission so I'm used to it, but they have good faith and a good attitude so I am happy with that. Something that I have been sharing a lot is the grace of Christ. Helping people (and my district) understand that it's not the light at the end of the dark tunnel, it's the light that helps us through that tunnel. It's been such a help to me to understand that as I've struggled throughout my mission. I love this work and I love my people, and I'm gonna push soooooooo hard this last year that I have.

New companion and new responsibility

Thanksgiving was delicious and fun!

11-27-17
It's been a week full of miracles! We received referral from a member a few weeks ago for a lady but we haven't really been able to see her until last Tuesday. She happily let us in when we knocked on her door and was very active in our discussion, at the end of the lesson we invited her to be baptized on the 24th of December, to which she replied "Of course! Does it have to be that far away?" How amazing is that! God is going to make it happen and I know it! If ya'll could pray for her health, I know she would really appreciate it! I hope all of you are starting to think of ways to participate in the #LighttheWorld Campaign this year, it starts on December 1st and goes until the 25th(Christmas). 25 ways in 25 days to share and increase your light!!

I am so glad this week is over! It's just been a whole bunch of running around trying to get Elder Wilcox's stuff ready so he can go home. I have my new companion, Elder Mangum, from St.George UT! He is cool and I am looking forward to this new transfer! We have had some issues with a couple of our investigators, trying to figure out what ward they go to. So we have been talking to President Hall about it and we are still figuring that out... they will still be baptized we just don't know where haha. Other than that we really have much more happen this week. I am now a District Supervisor and its good District and a wonderful area, success is soon to come!  Something I have been really working on is connecting people to heaven. It is something President Hall invited us to learn more about and understand how we do it. I have learned that the most important thing everyone needs to know is that God is YOUR'S and MINE'S and EVERYONE'S loving Heavenly Father! We need to have this connection with Him so that we may be able to understand to whom we pray so we can then receive answers to our questions! So simple, yet so hard to understand. I invite all of you young adults that get or read this email to go watch the face to face with Elder Oaks and Elder Ballard. It has some amazing counsel!

The work moves on 11-13-17

Well I am sure many of you saw my Facebook post this last week that the mission is starting to use Facebook within the next few weeks. It's gonna be weird! Well the work is progressing well in the beautiful Rosenburg area.
#MasQueNuca We were also able to find a couple new investigators also this week. We have an investigator from India and is really looking for a closer relationship with Jesus Christ, but the language barrier is kind of a challenge. Then we have another, who is the friend of a less-active member who is starting to come back to church. Super pumped to continue to work this wonderful area!

Oh also we got our good 'ol Toyoyta Corolla stuck in the mud trying to get to our investigators the other night haha we keep asking the APs if we can get a truck but it hasn't happened yet. It was pretty awesome actually, we called our member who's house we were trying to get to and she called her "nephew" to come get us unstuck. Not 30 second later we see a lights heading our way and a minuet later a big feller on a 4-Wheeler dived off the levy above us and come to our rescue with his awesome little back-country wheeler! He sure reminded me of dad, other than he was smoking, and he hooked us up and dragged us out of there! Also one of our investigators from our last area got BAPTIZED!!!!!! Elder Lozano and Woodward called me earlier the week the let us know and to invite us up to be there for it! I am so happy for and this big step she has taken towards heaven!
Twas' a great week! Yo se que Dios esta por nosotros siempre, solamente necesitamos pedir por su ayuda y ya!

"Hello my friend, can you pack your bags for me?" - President Hall

Leaving my companions
Oct.30th
Wow, what a crazy, crazy, week! President Hall called me after district council on Wednesday and told me he needed me to pack my bags and be at the mission office by 3 O'clock.  "OK Pres, I think I can do that..." So here I am now, out of the city and down back to the country and speaking English instead of Spanish. I have replaced two really amazing Elders,  they are doing what needs to be done right now and hopefully one of them will be back out in a few months. I am now with Elder Wilcox in Rosenburg, we get along really really well but he is finishing his mission in 3 weeks. It is super different being in an English area and going to a white ward...culture shock to the max. I only had 2 weeks in H2 but I will miss it a ton! We have some awesome investigators down here, a part member family that we are working so I am looking forward to get the work rolling here again! How amazing is the Plan of Salvation!

Nov. 6th
Well this week has been a pretty crazy week just as far as having no time goes. We had ZL exchanges, Zone Conference, and interviews this week and it just seemed to take a lot of our time. OH and then we had day light savings, which just feels weird now. Other than than it was actually a pretty decent week. We have a mom and son that accepted to be baptized and so did another person, so we are super happy for them to want to follow Jesus Christ and receive the promised blessings of said ordinance. No new investigators but some good potentials that we will work with this coming week. Also...we are getting smartphones now...so if anyone has some sort of Samsung smartphone, let me know! I am super interested to see how the work is going to change within the coming months and I am excited to continue to work this area! #MasQueNunca#FelizNavidad#QuereSerBautizado#Porfa?

Gang fights, miracles, and sick days

Well I am sure ya'll are wondering what is gonna happen in this email because of the crazy title. The week started out with Elder Woodward and I getting the spews, so that sucked for a while. Then one of our less-active families we are working with right now had a death in the family... there was a gang shoot out and their niece, a 4 year old girl was shot and killed, and the mom was hit in the chest. So thank heavens for the Plan of Salvation. It is a really sad story and happened at an apartment we are always working in BUT the family is strong and hopefully we will get to go see them soon. Miracle: A girl walked into church last week and told us she wants to get baptized... she is getting baptized on the 11th of November! This work is crazy true and I wish everyone would just accept it!!!

Farewell Manvel East

Well I am out of here! I am being transferred back up to the city, but this time deep city in the Houston 2 Ward. My new companions will be Elder Woodward...again lol! I will be in a trio with Elder Lozano, he is a good missionary and a hard worker. I'm super excited for this next transfer!

I will miss Elder Sibaja, we got along really well, but I need this opportunity to continue to grow. I will be leaving my dear members and investigators in the hands of a good missionary. We found a wonderful family this week, they are from Venezuela and have had a lot of contact with the church. They were a referral from the English Elders in Friendswood and they are very interested in the Gospel. One of our investigators will be baptized on the 28th of this month so I am excited to come back for that.  I have less than a year left and I am not going to waste a second of this precious time!

A cool story for the week: A less-active member called us for some help to move some furniture or something so we were like of course. So they finally pick us up and we find out it's not just some furniture...it's a whole moving truck full. So we being strong young men with a desire and maybe a little pride said of course we can get er' done. Well we did...after having to wait until the mom drove back to Alvin (a half-hour away) to get the keys for the truck we are supposed to unload. During this time we find out that her son (the one we are moving) was a TV reported for UNIVISION and had recently lost his job. He is a member but very inactive, but while we were there waiting, we helped him understand that everything happens for a reason, and that if we turn to Christ and give Him our troubles, He will take them and make them strengths. So he (Edgar, the son) ended up being a lot happier by the time we left and is looking forward to coming back to church. Cool!

Less than a year left...afterburner time!

Bueno, ya saben que tengo un ano aquí en Houston. Estoy trabajando, predicando, y tratando para llegar a ser un muy bueno misionero del Senor. Se que aquí es donde yo necesito estar en estos momentos. Another wonderful week as passed by down here in sweet ol' Alvin. Elder Sibaja and I have really stepped it up the past few weeks. We had interviews with President Hall this week and it was super nice to be able to talk to him again. We are still working with one of our investigators , just trying to get her married so she can be baptized. Another one is still on track to be baptized on the 28th of October, and we have a bunch of other investigators that are still in the early steps. The work is doing very well and the ward is also starting to change. There is definitely a feeling of love around the whole ward right now! We finally moved into our own apartment this week, after living with the Zone Leaders for more than a month. We are still helping with Harvey clean up here in Alvin but not as much as in Houston. Other than that nothing much has happened. I know that the Christ is at the head of this church!

An Apostle, a change, and a new self

part-zone work crew
September 18th
Wow. What a week it has been! Let me first start off by saying, God is good. I have gone through a change the past few weeks, through the refiner's fire, and have come out with a new self. The Refiner has seen it fit for my companion and I to be tested, taken us to our limits, and has blessed us immensely in return for our diligence. We have been blessed with an abundance of the Spirit, and with the Spirit come the gifts of. I have been able to speak my best Spanish yet, our companionship is the most unified it has ever been, and I have been able to love with the gift of charity. Also, Elder Rasband of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, came to our stake center on Sunday. I was able to shake his hand and say "Hi" to him, and boy was that cool! The spirit he brought with him was astounding. He spoke on behalf of President Monson and informed us the world is praying for us. The Prince of Peace is our captain in this earthly battle! Keep the faith and the prayers rolling, they help a ton!

From Mission President Hall's Pen 9-11-17 (Tale of Two Cities)

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way—in short, the period was so far like the present period..." These are the opening words to Charles Dicken's famous work, "A Tale of Two Cities".  As I have driven, walked, and worked the streets of Houston the last two weeks, these words have echoed in my mind.

As soon at the roads were passable into Houston, Sister Hall and I drove into the city to get a feel for the impact of hurricane Harvey.  What we saw surprised us... On one side of the street was utter destruction, and yet, a street away there was no evidence that the storm had even come ashore.  The contrast was and still is remarkable to behold.  There are individuals and families who are rebuilding their lives, and there are individuals and families that go on with their day to day like they always have.  There are piles of debris, treasured memories, and valued belongings covering once manicured lawns, while the other side of the street is still manicured and the picture of peace.

The impact of Harvey fell upon both the righteous and the unrighteous, the educated and the uneducated, the rich and the poor.  There was no discrimination of ethnicity, age, gender, health, religion or social status.  The floods came and went and either mildly inconvenienced some for a few days or have caused varying degrees of disruption to life and home for months to come.  There are those with flood insurance and there are those without flood insurance.  There are those who take no thought for the loss of material possessions, and there are those that are still lamenting the loss of a what they once had.

This is the nature of mortality...  We don't need a Harvey to show up to Houston to find these two tales in all areas of the world or in our own lives.  For some, life is the best of times, and for others it feels like the worst of times, and for some it can change almost daily.  We see contrast at its best and opposition in all things at its finest.  It's a fragile balance and it can change on us overnight as life storms and then calms. The degree to which we feel the contrast will be relative to our individual circumstances and our perspective on the purpose of our lives.  What might be a huge and overwhelming issue for one, may be nothing more than a small annoyance to another.  Regardless, we can be assured they will come to all of us in some form or another either due to the consequence of choice, and in many cases, through nothing of our own doing.

As I pondered on these great contrasts, these two tales, my mind was taken to the words of President Gordon B. Hinckley who taught, "There never was a greater time in the history of the world to live upon the earth than this. How grateful every one of us ought to feel for being alive in this wonderful time with all the marvelous blessings we have. ... And on top of all that is the Restoration of the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ with all of the keys and authority, with all the gifts and blessings, with all the organization and doctrine of all previous dispensations all brought into one. And you and I are partakers of that marvelous restoration."  As I remember this teaching, I feel incredibly blessed to live in the best of times...   It doesn't matter how many hurricanes rage, earthquakes shake, political and economic issues prevail; I know the battle is won and I need not fear as I am blessed!

In the same breath, President Hinckley didn't shy away, from recognizing the difficulties of our day, "I have little doubt that many of us are troubled with fears concerning ourselves. We are in a period of stress across the world. There are occasionally hard days for each of us." The worst of times can and do feel real and at times overwhelming.

His optimistic message, however, "I am asking that we stop seeking out the storms and enjoy more fully the sunlight.  I am suggesting that as we go through life we "accentuate the positive."  Do not despair. Do not give up. Look for the sunlight through the clouds. Opportunities will eventually open to you."   I trust this optimism with my whole soul on days where it feels like there is no silver lining in the dark clouds.

Elders & Sisters, our lives will be a tale of two cities.  On some days, the Harvey's of our life will come as consequences of choice or unexpectedly and without warning.  At other times, we will see nothing but blessings all around us.  It is the nature of the fall of man to have two tales, even if we're living as righteously as we can and doing all that we should.  In these moments, you have a choice of whether you will see the sunlight or the storm.  You can be optimistic and look to the Savior with faith, and hope, and trust, and positivity, or you can be doubting, discouraged, and distraught.  It's not a question of "if" the winds or storms will come, but "when".  As Helaman promised and taught so well, "...remember, remember that it is upon the rock of our Redeemer, who is Christ, the Son of God, that ye must build your foundation... because of the rock upon which ye are built, which is a sure foundation, a foundation whereon if men build they cannot fall."  You bring optimism and positivity to people you teach each day in a fallen world.  You know that opposition is needful for growth.  You know that as we humble ourselves, and come unto Christ, His grace is sufficient for all people.  Fear not the tale of two cities... Embrace what comes your way, live life to the fullest, doubt not, fear not, and trust the Savior to make all things work out in the end.  I know He will and I love the hope, peace, light, truth, and assurance that He gives.  I love ya!

In the midst of destruction and sadness, there is light!

Sept. 4, 2017
Wow...what a week! Let me first start off by saying I am so grateful for the light and love that the Gospel of Jesus Christ offers EVERYONE. The news covers mostly the Houston area and yes the devastation up there is massive, but let me tell ya, it's just as bad here in our zone! Friendswood is destroyed, as well as Dickinson, and Rosharon. Alvin was not to badly effected, so we were blessed. As I have seen the tears and worry in the eyes of those we have served, I have seen the light of Christ that radiates from His representatives, soothing and calming the pain of loss. I have received answers to prayers and questions I have had for a long time this week, during scripture study and service, that have brought to light a deeper love for the Gospel. I LOVE my mission, I LOVE the dear people I serve, and I LOVE our Savior! It is amazing how people are suddenly able to work together to help each other! I can not express the gratitude I have for my life and for the opportunity I have to serve.

I've seen fire and I've seen rain...

Well for those of you who don't know, Hurricane Harvey tried to wreck Texas...and did! We are safe here in Alvin, no flooding, no deaths, just fire and rain! Houston and surrounding areas are destroyed, including parts of our area that have suffered serious flooding. Everything is shut down here, but we are OK as far as food and water. So don't worry about the stories I am about to tell. The Lord is watching over us and President Hall is very aware of everything that is going on, we don't make a move unless he knows first. The week started off pretty good, we found a new investigator. Then on Thursday our apartment caught fire, there was a fight two doors over from us and someone tried to kill someone else with gas. Nobody died, but it caught the whole building on fire. Elder Sibaja and I are fine, and we were able to recover 95% of our items. Our neighbors lost everything, so we are doing just fine! During this time we were instructed to prepare to evacuate, as Harvey came closer. Nothing but blessings we have received and God is on our side! We may be getting moved to Houston to help with the flooding once everything settles down. God is good and ALL powerful. I testify of that! If only I could tell ya'll more stories, but mom would freak! lol.

"...concerning the coming of Christ..." Alma 34:2

Hermana Yungfliesch is going home this week ( us at a baptism for the sisters investigator)

Wow, what an amazing week! The Lord has shown for His hand clearly this week, we have been blessed to be able to find many people to teach! It all started Monday with finding this awesome English speaking fellow, who is super interested and a truth seeker. We then came across a lady who is just super sweet and really willing to learn even though life is hard. Another guy is really cool and really interested in the Book of Mormon. Last but seriously not least is a wonderful woman we found here at a garage sale! She is just amazing and really ready to learn. I also bought nice pair of boots off her for $10 (#Bdaymoney). Elder Sibaja and I are working super hard here and our efforts are continually shown, hopefully we can finally get some baptisms rolling!

It's also been a rough week, I guess Satan is seeing our efforts too and is trying to shut us down, tons of people yelling at us, and for some reason we run into a lot of pastors now...they REALLY don't like us lolz.

Helping our investigators move

Once more it's p-day somehow! We had a really tough week this week, some of our investigators were moving so we signed up to help them move and basically remodel their new house... so as far proselyting goes not much time. BUT, we were blessed for our diligent efforts with the little time we did have! We found 2 new investigators, and we had 5 people come to church and most of our investigators are still progressing really well! We have investigators that are husband and wife and are SUPER awesome. They started calling us theirs sons after a little bit because we spent so much time with them! I stinking love my area and the people here! Souls are precious people!

Faith, Power, and the gift of tongues.

Sweating in the field with Elder Sibaja

Whew, what a week it's been! Elder Sibaja and I are getting along really well and this area and our investigators are all progressing! This past week has been one full of teaching, driving, and walking. 2 of our investigators accepted to work toward the 26th of August to be baptized, another one is still doing amazing and came to another baptism, and we even have another one that is reading the BOM and praying, and the others we are still just trying to get rolling. We had the opportunity to go the temple Thursday, boy how wonderful is it to break from the world for a few hours and just be free! We are to know, to learn, and to act. It's stinking hard to act a lot of the time, but that is how we grow. God has blessed us with the Gospel of His Son, Jesus Christ, to help us act, know, and learn. Through the Holy Ghost we are able to access special gifts that can help us grow, succeed, and communicate. I love the gift of tongues and interpretation of! It's really been a big tool the past week and I testify of the love the God has for ALL of His children! Let us be full of faith and hope therefore leading us to action! Full week

Our district

Holy cow! What a crazy week it has been, full of awesome new investigators, crazy lightening and drunk guys, transfers, and an awkward baptism. We had been trying to see this member referral for the past two transfers when this last week we were able to finally have a sit down lesson with the parents and 2 of the kids! We committed them to church and they came that Sunday!!! Other than them not actually being married, they are progressing well. We also found out another one of our investigators is not married, so that will push back the date, but she is still coming to church and she just went for a temple tour! We also had a baptism in the District this week, the sisters investigator got baptized Saturday, it was kinda of awkward because there wasn't enough water so he had to sit! Kinda funny but still super spiritual.

The weather was nuts also, some legit lightening tried to fry Elder Ibarra and I while out knocking doors but we found this one drunk Mexican to talk to, so we stayed out of the majority of the weather. I went on exchanges back up to Sunnyside with Elder Mckeon and that was fun. I will be taking over the area with Elder Sibaja as my new comp. Super pumped for this next transfer!

Drummin' in the heat

July 10th
Well once again it's P-day and this transfer is almost already over! I've been out now a little over 9 months and I still have no idea what I'm doing LOLZ. Well first off it was flippin' hot this week, nothing like sweat marks and tan lines! One of our investigators is coming to church and has accepted to be baptized on the 30th of this month! She is such a sweet woman and is very understanding of the Gospel. We found some new investigators this week also so I'm excited to continue to work with them and hopeful progress them towards repentance and peace. OHHHHHHH something super cool as far as worldly things go, it happened last P-day when we started proselyting. Elder Ibarra and I were out knocking doors when the slight sound of drums touched my ears, immediately my interest was spiked as I know a little something of the drum game. I narrowed the sound down to two doors and we knocked one...and sure enough the sound of heaven was coming from that door! A fellow opened the door and he proudly exclaimed that he's gay.  I asked if I could play his drums and he said of course and we actually had a short little jam session with his boyfriend and the missionaries! Hearts were softened towards the church and I walked away with a massive smile on my face! Even though we don't realize it our actions are seen, and we should do our best to constantly be looking for opportunities to share the gospel and soften hearts.
